Elegantly Entwined Ear Warmer

Updated: Apr 24, 2021

What do you do when it’s freezing cold outside but you’ve already put your hair up for the day so a bobble hat isn’t going to cut it? This ear warmer is the perfect solution; it also looks super cute with your hair down too and prevents the hat hair situation when you do go back inside. Honestly, it ticks all of the boxes as a cold weather necessity.

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know I asked you all which way around you’d wear this ear warmer. It is one of those rare makes where the inverted side looks different but just as good as the right side, have a look at the pictures to see what I mean and let me know which side you prefer in the comments.

I made this using King Cole Big Value Super Chunky in the shade Airforce (1759)[paid link]. I used approximately 1 ball (100g). This ear warmer is made of 5 braided strands so you could get super creative with the design and colour combinations you use. I am definitely planning to make a rainbow one in the future! I got my yarn from LoveCrafts, this yarn is available <here>[paid link]

This ear warmer is made to match the Intertwined Infinity Scarf which is also available as a free pattern on my blog <here>

You will need:

  • 100g Super Chunky Yarn

  • 8mm Crochet Hook

  • Yarn Needle

  • Scissors

  • Safety Pins (optional – helps with assembly)

Pattern Terms:

This pattern uses UK crochet terms

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in UK crochet terms

  • Finished ear warmer measures approximately 25cm when folded flat (approximately half of the overall size).

  • I am left handed so some of the progress photos and diagrams may seem backwards to you, not to worry, it’s exactly the same just mirrored.

Pattern:

Strands (make 5)

ch172

Row1 – working in the 3rd chain from the hook, 170htr [70]

At the end of Row1 tie off and cut, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Repeat the pattern above until you have 5 long strands.

Assemble:

Now we are going to braid the 5 strands together, this is easier to do on a large flat surface like the floor or a table.

Lay the 5 strands out so they are all in line and running parallel to each other. To start you may want to weight the ends, have someone hold then or pin them down depending on where you’re working.

Divide the strands so there is 2 on one side and 3 on the other. Always working from the side with 3 strands, take the outside strand and pass it over the middle strand and under the inside strand and add it to the other side. Now switch to the other side as it now has 3 strands and repeat. See diagram for more detail.

Once you have finished the braid you need to connect the top end to the bottom end to form a circle.

Start by folding the braid in half so the top and bottom ends meet, try to keep the braid at either ends tight and secure as you do this.

Then match the strands at the top of the bottom, I secured the 2 ends together using safety pins.

Once you are happy with the matches use the long yarn tails and your yarn needle to sew the top strand to the bottom strand.

You have now finished your ear warmer!
